Link building is the practice of getting other websites to link to yours, because Google still treats links as a primary signal of authority. It remains the most difficult and most expensive part of SEO, because a link must be earned from an independent party who has no obligation to give it.
Link building is also the most commonly outsourced SEO discipline, for a structural reason: outreach does not scale with headcount. Doubling your team does not double your links, because the constraint is the response rate of strangers, not the hours you can bill.
Why link building is the part everyone outsources
Every other SEO discipline scales with skill and time. Hire a better technical SEO, get better technical SEO. Hire two writers, get twice the content.
Link building does not work like that.
You send 200 emails. You get 8 replies. You get 3 links.
Hiring a second person to send 200 more emails gets you 3 more links, at the cost of a salary. The replies do not get better because the person is better — they get better because the asset is better.
Which is why outsource link building carries a $25.30 CPC. Agencies are actively paying to solve this, because they have worked out that it is the one discipline where the internal hire does not pay for itself.

Can you do SEO without link building?
590 people a month search this, which tells you how much everyone wants the answer to be yes.
The honest answer: sometimes, and less often than you would like.
You can rank without meaningful link building when:
- The market is genuinely uncompetitive. Local service businesses in small towns.
- Long-tail informational content in niches nobody is fighting over.
- Your domain already has authority from links earned years ago.
- You are competing in the map pack, where proximity, reviews and GBP optimisation carry far more weight than links.
You cannot rank without links when:
- The commercial term is worth real money, which is precisely the term your client cares about.
- Your competitors have spent years and real budget building authority.
- The SERP is dominated by established brands and publishers.
The uncomfortable summary: you can build a lot of traffic without links. You usually cannot build the money traffic without them.
So the honest strategic answer for most agencies: do everything else first, because technical and content work is cheaper and faster. Then, when you have run out of things you can win without links, start building them on a small number of pages that actually matter.
Do not build links to a broken site. It is the most expensive way to waste money in SEO.
What actually builds links in 2026
In descending order of what we would spend a budget on.
Original data
Publish something nobody else has. A survey, a study, an analysis of a dataset you have access to.
This is the single most effective link building asset that exists, and also the most under-used, because it is real work and there is no shortcut.
Why it works so completely: a journalist writing about your industry needs a statistic. If yours is the only source, they must cite you. That is not persuasion, it is arithmetic.
And it now does double duty. An LLM asked a question in your category has the same problem: it needs a number, and if you are the only source, you are the citation. Original research is simultaneously the best link building asset and the best AI citation asset.
Digital PR
Reactive commentary, journalist requests, data-led stories, expert quotes.
Real editorial links from real publications with real readers. The most valuable links available and the hardest to get. → Digital PR for agencies
Free tools and calculators
Build something genuinely useful and free. A calculator, a checker, a generator.
People link to tools without being asked. For years. It is the only link building asset that keeps working while you sleep.
Unlinked brand mentions
Somebody already wrote about your client and did not link.
This is the highest-conversion outreach in existence and almost nobody does it. The person already decided you were worth mentioning. You are asking them to add a hyperlink to a sentence they already wrote.
Find them: Ahrefs Content Explorer, Google Alerts, "brand name" -site:brandsite.com.
Genuinely good content people want to cite
Which is not a tactic, it is a prerequisite. You cannot outreach your way out of having nothing worth linking to.
What no longer works, or never did
- Directory submissions at scale. Dead for a decade. Still being sold.
- PBNs. Work until they do not, and when they stop, the client is deindexed. → Guest posts, niche edits and PBNs
- Buying links from anyone who emails you. If they are emailing you, they are emailing everyone.
- Reciprocal link schemes. Detectable, obvious, worthless.
- The Skyscraper Technique, as usually practised. → The Skyscraper Technique: does it still work?
What a link is actually worth
| Link type | Value |
|---|---|
| Editorial link from a relevant, trafficked publication | Very high |
| Link from a site that ranks for your topic | High |
| Link inside relevant body content | High |
| Link from a site with real organic traffic | The test that matters most |
| Link from a high-DR site with no traffic | Near zero. DR is a vendor's score, not a Google metric. |
| Sitewide footer or sidebar link | Low |
| Paid link from a network | Negative, eventually |
The single test: does this site have real organic traffic from real searches? If it does not, the link is worth nothing regardless of its Domain Rating.
Outsourcing link building without getting burned
Ask these five questions, of us and of everybody else.
- Show me five domains you have placed on. Not a DR range. Actual domains. Then check their organic traffic yourself.
- Are these paid placements? Many "guest post" services are pay-to-publish networks. A provider who dodges this is telling you.
- Do I own the links? Some providers retain link ownership so they can remove them if you leave.
- What is the outreach process? If the answer is vague, there is no outreach.
- What will you refuse to do? A provider who will not name a single tactic they refuse has no line.

What is link building?
Getting other websites to link to yours. Google still treats links as a primary authority signal, which makes it the most difficult and expensive part of SEO.
Why do agencies outsource link building?
Because outreach does not scale with headcount. It is the one SEO discipline where an internal hire frequently does not pay for itself.
Can you do SEO without link building?
Sometimes. In uncompetitive markets, long-tail content, the map pack, or on a domain with existing authority. You usually cannot rank the commercially valuable terms without links.
What is the best link building strategy in 2026?
Original data, because a journalist or an LLM needing a statistic must cite the only source that has it. Then digital PR, free tools, and unlinked brand mentions.
How many backlinks do I need?
Analyse what the pages currently ranking have and work out the gap. Anyone quoting a number without that analysis is guessing.
Is buying links safe?
No. Paid links violate Google's guidelines. Whether you are caught is a probability, not a certainty.
What makes a link valuable?
Real organic traffic on the linking site, topical relevance, and editorial placement in body content. A high Domain Rating on a site with no traffic is worth close to nothing.
How long does link building take to work?
Weeks to months for a link to be processed. Meaningful authority change takes six to twelve months of consistent work.
