Answer engine optimisation is the practice of getting your content quoted and cited inside generated answers: AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot.
And the honest definition, which the industry does not want to give you, is this: AEO is roughly 80% ordinary SEO.
The retrieval systems behind these answers are search indexes. ChatGPT search retrieves from Bing. AI Overviews retrieve from Google. If you do not rank, you are not in the candidate pool, and nothing else you do matters.
What genuinely changes is the last 20%, and it changes the goal. Traditional SEO wants a position and a click. AEO wants your sentence to be the one the model lifts, and your name to be the one it says. Ranking makes you a candidate. Extraction makes you the answer.
Why the term exists, and why it is oversold
Because a large number of consultants needed a new thing to sell.
AEO is being marketed as a new discipline requiring new tools, new audits and a new retainer line.
It is mostly not.
Here is what has not changed: you still need to be crawlable, indexable and fast. You still need to rank. You still need authority and links. You still need content that is actually good.
Here is what has changed: the winner is no longer the page that gets the click. It is the page that gets quoted. And those are different pages, optimised differently, and you can hold position one and never be cited once.
That last sentence is the whole discipline.
The 80% that is just SEO
Say it plainly, because saying it is what makes you trustworthy.
You must be in the index. ChatGPT search retrieves from Bing. A site absent from Bing is invisible to ChatGPT no matter how it ranks in Google. And almost nobody has set up Bing Webmaster Tools. → The best SEO tools
You must rank. The generated answer is assembled from pages the retrieval system found. It found them by ranking them.
You must be crawlable. By Googlebot, Bingbot, and the AI crawlers, which is a separate permission and which most sites have never checked. → The AI crawler guide
You must have authority. Models cite sources they have reason to trust, and that trust is built the way it always was.
You must be an entity. Your name, appearing repeatedly alongside your category, across the web, in other people's writing. That is what makes a model name you when somebody asks who is good in your field. → Topical authority and entity SEO
None of that is new. All of it is prerequisite.
The 20% that is genuinely different
And this is what AEO actually is.
Answer in the first 90 words. Directly under the H1. Before the introduction, the context-setting and the throat-clearing. Extraction heavily favours passages near the top of a document, and every piece of marketing content ever written buries the answer under three paragraphs of preamble.
Write self-contained claims. Every important sentence must survive being lifted out of the page and pasted somewhere else.
"As we explored above, this approach brings a number of benefits" is meaningless in isolation. It cannot be quoted. And a shocking amount of professional content is written entirely in that register, because it was written to be read linearly by a human who started at the top.
Nobody starts at the top any more. A machine arrives, takes one paragraph, and leaves.
Question-form headings. What is answer engine optimisation? extracts. Our Approach does not. The heading is a retrieval hook.
Tables. One of the highest-extraction formats that exists, because it is already structured and a model does not have to infer the relationships.
Get the content out of JavaScript accordions. This is the most common silent failure we find in audits. The content is in the HTML. It ranks. And it is frequently not extracted, because it is not rendered as visible text. A site can hold position one on a query and never appear in a single AI Overview for it, and the cause is a design decision made two years ago.
Diagrams as SVG, not PNG. Text inside an SVG is machine-readable text. Text baked into a PNG is pixels. Every explanatory diagram you have exported as a PNG is, to a language model, a blank rectangle. → Image SEO
A named author with Person schema. Anonymous content does not get cited. Models prefer attributable sources, and so do the humans reading the citation.
Specificity over adjectives. A model quotes a number, a date, a named mechanism. It does not quote "industry-leading solutions."
The measurement problem, which is real and which nobody admits
Roughly 91% of URLs cited by language models appear in only one platform.
Which means there is no such thing as an "AI visibility score."
A tool that gives you a single number across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews is averaging four almost entirely non-overlapping sets of citations into one figure that describes nothing.
Measure per platform, or do not measure.
And the free option is better than the paid ones: Bing Webmaster Tools has provided AI-visibility metrics free, in preview, since June 2026. First-party data, from the index that powers ChatGPT search, at no cost. The paid AI visibility tools are charging for a worse version of it. → The best LLM SEO tracking tools
Should you sell AEO as a separate service?
No, and we have taken a position on this that costs us money.
If AEO is 80% SEO, then selling it as a separate retainer means charging a client twice for the same work.
We think that is dishonest, and we think it will age badly. In two years, "AEO" will simply be what SEO means, in the same way that "mobile SEO" stopped being a separate product once every site was mobile.
Sell SEO. Do the AEO work inside it. Report the AI citations as one of the outcomes.
And if a competitor is selling your client a separate AEO retainer, ask them what is in it that is not in the SEO retainer. The answer will be short.
→ Should agencies sell AEO? — the full argument, including what to charge if you disagree with us.
What this is actually for
Around 93% of Google AI Mode sessions end without a click.
Read that again, because it is the whole business case.
For those searchers, being named in the generated answer is the only impression available to you. There is no click to win. There is only the citation.
Which reframes the entire objective. You are no longer competing for a visit. You are competing to be the source.
And the defensible ground is what a model cannot answer for you: your actual prices, your actual stock, your actual availability, your actual local presence. Transactional, real-time, first-party. A language model can explain what a timing belt does. It cannot tell someone what you charge to replace one, or whether you can do it on Thursday.
What is answer engine optimisation?
The practice of getting your content quoted and cited inside generated answers such as AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. Honestly, it is about 80% ordinary SEO with a different objective: ranking makes you a candidate, extraction makes you the answer.
Is AEO different from SEO?
Mostly not. The retrieval systems behind generated answers are search indexes, so if you do not rank you are not in the candidate pool. What changes is the last 20%: writing to be extracted rather than to be clicked.
How do I get my content into an AI Overview?
Answer in the first 90 words, write self-contained claims that survive being lifted out of the page, use question-form headings and tables, keep important content out of JavaScript accordions, use SVG rather than PNG for diagrams, and give the page a named author.
Why does my page rank but never get cited?
Most commonly because the content is in a JavaScript accordion or tab, so it is in the HTML and indexed but not extracted. It is the most common silent failure we find, and it is always a design decision.
Can I measure AI visibility with one score?
No. Roughly 91% of URLs cited by language models appear in only one platform, so a single score averages four non-overlapping citation sets into a number that describes nothing. Measure per platform.
Should I pay for an AEO service?
Ask what is in it that is not already in an SEO retainer. If AEO is 80% SEO, a separate AEO retainer is charging you twice for the same work.
Why does AEO matter if I already rank?
Because around 93% of Google AI Mode sessions end without a click. For those searchers there is no visit to win. Being named in the answer is the only impression available to you.
